Which are considered to be medium-sized cities in France?

I am moving to France in September (exchange) and I haven't been told exactly where I am going to live, but all I know is that I shall be living in a medium-sized city which is 20 kilometers away from a big city. Does anyone have any ideas? Please heeelp.
